On September 23, 2024, the Joint Symposium on Vaccinology: Science and Public Health was held at Nagasaki University Sakamoto Campus. This symposium was co-hosted by the Strategic Center of Biomedical Advanced Vaccine Research and Development for Preparedness and Response (SCARDA) of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), in collaboration with the Nagasaki University WISE Programme, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and the Vaccine Research and Development Center Nagasaki University (VRDC).
Following the symposium, a four-day short course titled “Vaccinology: Science and Public Health,” organized by the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH) Nagasaki University and LSHTM, took place from September 24 to 27, 2024. The Nagasaki University WISE Programme and the VRDC also co-hosted this course.
The symposium and short course covered a wide range of scientific and public health aspects of vaccinology, discussing vaccine development, safety, and preparedness for pandemics. A total of 82 participants attended the symposium, while 31 participants joined the short course. Experts and researchers involved in vaccine and immunization research, development, epidemiology, and policy-making from both Japan and abroad were present, including renowned global researchers.
Students from the Graduate School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health (TMGH) at Nagasaki University sought feedback from participants through poster sessions. The events were enriching and concluded successfully.
Moving forward, the VRDC remains committed to contributing to the community and international society through such initiatives, aiming for the development of safer and more effective vaccines.
Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all participants of the symposium and short course, as well as to those who supported us in making these events possible.
