As one of Japan’s vaccine research and development centers, Nagasaki University is actively engaged in vaccine development. To help citizens better understand the vaccines in which our university is deeply involved, we are pleased to host this public lecture in collaboration with the 66th Annual Meeting for the Japan Society of Tropical Medicine, the Japan Society of Tropical Medicine, the Dejima Infectious Disease Research Alliance (DIDA) Vaccine Research and Development Center (VRDC) Nagasaki University, and the National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases (CCPID) Nagasaki University.
Part 1 will focus on Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), a dangerous infectious disease mainly spreading in western Japan. Transmitted by ticks and animals, SFTS has a fatality rate exceeding 10%, and this year has seen the highest number of reported cases. The lecture will explain basic information about SFTS, prevention methods, and the latest developments in treatments and vaccines.
Part 2 will explore the history of vaccines, beginning with smallpox vaccination, and their role in controlling many infectious diseases. It will also address the recent resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases, considering the current situation in Japan and globally, and discuss the role of vaccines and future challenges.
Nagasaki University’s Sakamoto Campus is home to five departments: the Institute of Tropical Medicine, the National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases (CCPID), the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, and the University Hospital. These departments are actively advancing infectious disease research. At the Dejima Infectious Disease Research Alliance (DIDA) Vaccine Research and Development Center (VRDC), the “World-Class Vaccine R&D Center Program” is underway, with many researchers working to protect public health and the economy from infectious diseases.
As a research institution dedicated to vaccine development to protect lives and health, we aim to provide accurate information to the public, foster understanding of vaccines, and create opportunities to learn together with the community. We especially encourage junior high and high school students — future researchers who will help protect lives — to take advantage of this opportunity to develop an interest in infectious diseases and vaccines.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming many participants.
