Summer Course 2025: Introduction to Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Modelling

From July 28 to August 4, 2025, Nagasaki University hosted the short course “Introduction to Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Modelling” at the GH Research Building, Sakamoto Campus. This was the third edition of the course, co-organized with the Japan Institute for Health and Security (JIHS).

The program featured a diverse group of lecturers from Japan and abroad, including faculty from Nagasaki University, the University of Tokyo, JIHS, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the University of North Carolina, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM, the Netherlands), and the National University of Singapore. This year, more than 45 participants — exceeding last year’s numbers — joined the course, representing a wide range of nationalities and research backgrounds.

Through lectures, special talks, and group work conducted in English, participants learned fundamental and applied concepts of infectious disease epidemiology. Cutting-edge topics in infectious disease modelling were introduced throughout the sessions, and the course incorporated interactive learning such as outbreak data analysis, discussions, and role-play exercises. These activities encouraged active engagement among early-career researchers and fostered the building of international networks.

The Infectious Disease Epidemiology Team at Nagasaki University will continue to provide training opportunities to nurture the next generation of researchers contributing to infectious disease and vaccine epidemiology.
